Convert to the right format
Make a compatible copy without losing sight of the original.
1. Choose for the destination
Use JPEG for ordinary photos when transparency is unnecessary, or PNG for transparent artwork and crisp graphics. WebP can suit web delivery when both your browser and destination support it. ICO is intended for icon workflows.
See the format reference for input limitations. A format that can be opened is not necessarily one the application can export.
2. Select an explicit output
In Settings, choose JPG, PNG, WebP or ICO under Convert to. WebP export depends on browser support. Use an explicit JPG or PNG selection for an uncommon source format when you need a predictable destination type.
Select Keep original dimensions if you do not also want to resize. Adjust the optimization method to suit the image. These settings are used when the file is added.
3. Check what changed
Add the source and inspect the result. Converting a transparent image to JPEG removes transparency, so check the background. Animated images may become still images, and this workflow is not designed to preserve all metadata.
Converting a JPEG to PNG does not recover lost detail. A new format can also produce a larger file; compare the size shown in Images with your needs.
4. Save and verify
Download the converted copy and open it in the application where you intend to use it. Keep the original for future edits. For a batch, prepare the ZIP and select its download link once it is ready.
